About La Colectiva

La Colectiva at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was founded with the belief that collective action is the key to creating positive change in our communities. Our team of passionate advocates and activists work tirelessly to organize advocacy workshops, community events, and social justice campaigns that address pressing issues and promote inclusivity and equality. With a deep-rooted commitment to social justice, we strive to empower individuals to create change and a more just society for all.

Our History

La Colectiva was founded in 1970 at UIUC. Initially, its primary focus was to advocate for the Latine immigrants at U of I and in the Champaign and Urbana areas. It continues to do that, but now it is broader in advocating any issues involving the Latin community, including other marginalized groups. In 2011, it became A YMCA-affiliated student organization. La Colectiva played a crucial role in creating safe spaces such as La Casa Cultural Latina and pushing for the Department of Latino/ Latina Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign since La Colectiva also played a crucial role in the 1992 UIUC Protest. Here, many U of I students did a sit in the Henry administration building demanding equal treatment for the Latino students on campus.
